CAREERS

A degree in Economics is widely regarded as a worthwhile preparation for many careers in business and government. More specifically, there is a wide range of jobs in companies, central and local government, European and international institutions, which directly use Economics and for which holders of good degrees in Economics are particularly sought. Many of those trained in Economics also go into careers in which do not use a specialist knowledge of Economics but do require the transferable skills, such as the ability to analyse complex problems, which are acquired by the study of Economics.

Here is a selection of the posts held by our graduates.

  • Tax consultant in accountancy firm
  • Chief Executive of an energy company
  • Area Manager in a multi-national company
  • Economic Adviser in the Civil Service
  • Fund Manager in the City
  • Investment Analyst in the City
  • Retail Director of a bank
  • Bank manager
  • Professor of Economics
  • Member of Parliament (and MSP)
  • Local authority Planning Officer

Postgraduate study

Job prospects in many careers, particularly in higher education and others that directly use Economics, can be enhanced by gaining a postgraduate degree in Economics. This could be a taught Master’s programme, or a PhD by research. Usually success in a taught Master’s programme is a prerequisite for starting a PhD. Many British universities offer postgraduate programmes. Stirling graduates have successfully completed postgraduate programmes at, for example, Edinburgh, the London School of Economics, Oxford, Cambridge and Warwick.

At Stirling, we have three taught programmes: the MSc in Banking and Finance and the MSc in Environmental Finance and the MSc in Energy Management.

We also collaborate with the other seven pre-1992 Scottish universities in running the Scottish Graduate Programme in Economics.
